Peterloo Tea Towel

£14.00

This tea towel commemorates the Peterloo massacre. In 1819, a crowd of 70,000 gathered peacefully in St Peter’s Field, Manchester, to demand political reform. At the request of magistrates, they were charged by cavalry; 15 lost their lives and up to 700 were injured. The infamous massacre became known as Peterloo (recalling the Battle of Waterloo) and eventually led to fairer suffrage. This design is based on a cartoon by Cruickshank. The text reads: “Down with ’em! Chop em down my brave boys… Remember the more you kill the less poor rates you’ll have to pay.”
