In 1834 some 100,000 people joined the Grand Demonstration that marched from Copenhagen Fiields to Parliament to demand the freedom of the Tolpuddle Martyrs and the rights of trade unions to organise. The Fields are now largely built on just north of Kings Cross but the site is marked by street names, plaques and a glorious mural by Edward Square, painted by David Bangs in 1984.

In 2009, local trade union and community activists celebrated the 175th anniversary of the Grand Demonstration.

A new plaque in honour of the Tolpuddle Martyrs and those who fought for their release was unveiled. A march was held and a day of music and speeches served to reconnect the local community with its past and with the tiny village in Dorset.

Cuban marching band, Paseo Malanga lead the procession through Islington.

Billy Bragg entertains the Islington audience.
