There was tension between the radical Methodist Chapel and the established power of land owners and employers. This tension that would sometimes lead to violence and unrest and was at the heart of the growing unrest at the terrible living conditions and unfair working conditions. George Loveless, leader of the Martyrs, was a lay preacher at the Tolpuddle Chapel. This exposed him to radical new thinking and developed his skill as a public speaker.
